How Variant is making good on their commitment to reengineer the trucking industry

Variant driver Juan Zea has always been a skeptic. And after more than a decade in the trucking industry—during which he worked for 4 companies and was an owner-operator for 9 years—he’s got a sharp eye for bullshit. So, when he joined Variant, he was already on the lookout for anything that might set off his radar.

He’s right for taking that approach, too. Other truck driving companies will say nearly anything to get drivers to join their fleet. And those false promises lead to low truck driver retention, with more than 1 in 3 drivers leaving their jobs in the first 90 days. Witnessing that kind of turnover has made Juan wary of any pitch a company makes to him upfront.

But to his surprise, Variant has delivered.

Going the Extra Mile(s)

One of Juan’s biggest issues with other truck driving companies was the amount of weekly mileage. While they would promise a certain number of miles per week, the actual number could vary wildly. But in his current role? Not the case.

“With Variant, the miles are consistent,” he said.

It’s true. In fact, Variant drivers get 2,400 miles per week on average, with some driving more than that. What’s more, all those miles rarely keep drivers from making it home on time. Variant consistently aims to get more drivers home on time.

Truck Driving Careers Made Personal

Drivers shouldn’t feel like they’re alone out on the road. With all the things they already have to put up with on a daily basis, the feeling of being abandoned shouldn’t be one of them. That’s why Variant makes a concerted effort to check on all of our drivers regularly.

Juan pointed out that since joining Variant, he consistently receives messages from Operations Specialists to make sure he has everything he needs.

“That makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than me,” he said.

This kind of personal attention is part of Variant’s larger mission to make drivers feel secure and cared for while out on the road. Another way Variant does this is through the Variant Ambassador program. Part mentor, part recruiter, Variant Ambassadors are fulltime drivers who also recruit new drivers to their Squad – a fleet within the larger fleet. This program is not only a way to grow the company but also a way to build community for our newest employees.

One of Many Truck Driver Testimonials

Juan’s experience at Variant isn’t rare—it’s typical. Just ask Jessica, or Steve, or any of the other 800+ truck driving professionals who drive for Variant.

“I’m so glad I made the decision to give Variant a try,” added Juan, “It’s been a wonderful experience.”

We’re striving every day to make Variant one of the best truck driving companies to work for. We believe it is and so do our drivers. They are the reason we’ll never stop working to make our industry better.
